Los Angelenos     Everyone Else

Los Angelenos
by mail: When you get those "pre-approved" letters in the mail for everything from credit cards and home equity loans to magazine subscriptions, don't throw away the return envelope. Most of these come with postage-paid return envelopes and, if the return address is outside of Los Angeles, you have a chance to clean our air, postage-free. Simply tape the seams with clear tape and slightly bulge the envelope to increase its volume before closing it. If the envelope features a window, or if you're feeling particularly ambitious, fill a  small plastic bag (we recommend Ziploc brand Snack Bags) with smog, seal it and enclose it in your return envelope and mail.

When sending letters to your representatives in Sacramento or Washington, D.C., be sure to enclose some L.A. smog. We recommend you include a printed smog report, so they'll know what they're getting.

by car: A car is, by design, a box of air. The bigger the car, the bigger the box of air it is. Next time you're travelling by car to a clean air destination outside of L.A. county, fill up your car with smog before you go (don't forget the trunk). Then, when you get where you're going, pull the car over and give it a good airing out (again, don't forget the trunk). Before you return, do the opposite: fill the car up with clean air, then air it out in Los Angeles when you get there.

Note for SUV owners: The best thing for you to do is fill up your SUV
with smog before leaving Los Angeles, then trade it in on a hybrid car at a dealership outside the county. Fill that hybrid car with clean air before you return. The difference in air volume is more than made up for by the reduction in emmissions!

by air: When packing for your next trip out of town, use an oversized suitcase and fill up the extra space with smog. Unless your bag is airtight, you may need to tape up the seams. When you get to your clean air destination, let out the smog, then refill your bag with clean air before you return.

If you have friends or relatives in Los Angeles, give them an extra treat next time you send them a letter or greeting card.
Include some clean air from back home!
